Treatments

Joint Mobilisation and Spinal Manipulation

Joint mobilisation and Spinal Manipulation is a form of hands-on therapy where we help to restore a joint normal range of movement that cannot be gained on our own through physiological movements. This may include moving joints in precise directions to help reduce pain, aid movement and help prevent unwanted loads on restricted tissues and structures. Mobilisations and manipulation are graded and mobilisations are performed with continual passive low-level movements at very speeds while manipulation is a passive, high velocity, low amplitude thrust applied to a joint complex to restore optimal motion, function, and/ or to reduce pain. These techniques are used by many practitioners such as Physiotherapists, Osteopaths and Chiropractors but may be called different terms.

Electrotherapy
EMS-Compex

There are many forms of Electrotherapy such as Ultrasound, TENS, EMS. that use an electric current to help improve healing, reduce pain and regain function.  We only use the Compex:  which is the world-leading form of  Electro Muscular Stimulation (EMS) and uses Electric impulses to your motor nerves that make the muscle contract. Compex can target specific muscles that you cannot during exercise helping to increase strength, endurance, and recovery. This means you can work a muscle hard without putting high forces or loading a joint that will give you gains when normal exercise and rehabilitation won't.  It can even target your slow or fast-twitch fibres giving you a real edge in rehabilitation and performance.  The Compex is used at all premiership football and rugby clubs being ahead of the game. With Stuart Mailer working at Chelsea FC for 5 years he used the Comepx frequently in the rehabilitation of their players. Stuart Mailler is the only Compex Advanced trainer in  Scotland.  Luckily we also rent outthe compex locally.

Exercise and Rehabilitation

Your Exercise or rehabilitation will be based on evidence and is bespoke to your condition, abilities and lifestyle as no two people or injuries are the same. Firstly we will assess you and then plan strategically the best form of rehabilitation or exercise for you. You will be guided step by step passing your outcome measures to help restore normal function or sporting performance.  The goal is to be able to recover to the level of activity you desire. This can be high-end sport or normal daily function. Your exercise may be low-level mobility work or it may incorporate strength work in the gym. This will all depend on your injury, imbalances and your recovery goals.  For example, if you have back pain you may be doing some exercises that you relate to Pilates or Core stability or you may be doing some Plyometric or jumping drills if you are returning to running.  With Stuart being a Personal Trainer, Sports Therapist, Pilates teacher and Physiotherapist you can be assured you get the highest level of expert care

Acupuncture

Acupuncture

At Stuart Mailer Physiotherapy and Sports Med, we incorporate classical specialized acupuncture into our treatment to effectively manage pain and inflammation. By utilizing traditional Chinese points, we stimulate the body’s natural healing processes, promoting recovery and rehabilitation. Acupuncture is often combined with other techniques like Electrotherapy and Manual Therapy for comprehensive care. Additionally, we use Dry Needling, a form of acupuncture, to alleviate muscular tightness trigger points, further supporting your journey to wellness.

Soft Tissue Therapy

Trigger Point Therapy
Sports MassageMyofascial Release
IASTM (Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilisation)

There are many techniques used for the treatment of soft tissues structures. The soft tissues incorporate our muscles, ligaments, tendons and fascia.  Treatments techniques such as Trigger points, Sports Massage, Myofascial release and IASTM are a range of non-invasive manual techniques that are used to treat musculoskeletal dysfunctions.  IASTM is a form of soft tissue work performed with the use of metal tools. The procedure uses instruments to mechanically stimulate soft tissue structures to relieve musculoskeletal pain and discomfort and improve overall mobility and function. Myofascial release is similar but through the use of hands.

Biomechanical Assessment

A biomechanical assessment is where we use video analysis to observe you walking, running, jumping, squatting or other movements that we have to assess to obtain accurate movement patterns and angles of dysfunctions. We can track your movement and trajectory to highlight technique and mechanical deficiencies that may be contributing to your injury or maybe a potential dysfunction. From this, we can observe techniques using overlay, side-by-side comparison and from different angles simultaneously and perform angle tracking. We then look at this together discussing your dysfunctions and can then plan your treatment and rehabilitation accordingly. This format will help you be aware of your improper movements and easily understand your corrective protocol.  Furthermore, we can then track your treatment progress over time, to increase the effectiveness of the rehab. this can be invaluable as through normal vision we can miss some small details or dysfunction that slow motion can observe.

Taping

Taping is a therapeutic tool that is utilised by therapists in a variety of settings from Sport, Geriatrics, Orthopedics, Paediatrics and more to provide support to injured structures, reduce pain, and swelling and help muscle activation.  There are many different kinds of tape used depending on the injury. The Kinesio Taping Method (pic ) has been used since the 1970s  and it can provide excellent support and help alleviate pain very quickly aiding your function. With the tape being designed with fragile and, sensitive skin in mind it can be used on many who are unable to use other Taping methods.  The ability to stay on and adhered to the skin when wet such as showering or swimming can make it a very good adjunct to your treatment due to being able to use it for many days without re-application.
